Tax the internet?
"Whose DUMB idea is that? Well actually, it's mine. And just maybe it ain't quite as dumb as you think. But whoahh! I'm not saying that the 'net isn't a GREAT invention. I love it. But there's a downside to it, just as there's a downside to everything.
"The problem is information. Information is the greatest resource anyone can have. All life, business, fun and games starts with knowing what's happening, where it's happening, how it's happening, when it's happening, to whom it's happening, and what you can do about it. But if you have too much information at your fingertips, the information devalues. That's why newspaper's love scoops. It means that only THEY have the story, so everyone has to read THEIR newspaper. That's business. That's what makes the money go round.
"Now think about gold. If everyone found gold nuggets in their back garden, what do you think would happen to the price? It would plummet, of course. Gold would be worthless. Same with diamonds. Or oil. Or anything. All supplies have to be LIMITED to have worth.
"But the internet pumps out ENDLESS nuggets of information. A chunk here. A chunk there. A drip, a drop and often a FLOOD.
"Car mechanics make their money by fixing cars. Yeah? But YouTube gives that knowledge away with how-to-fix-it videos, so mechanics now find it harder to make money. So okay, people SAVE money by fixing their OWN cars. But because the economy is so unbalanced, they HAVE to fix their OWN cars. It's a vicious circle, and it spirals downward.
There used to be lots of record shops selling vinyl and CDs. Then people simply pirated music on the 'net, so the shops went bust. Photographers used to make money selling photographs. Now everyone has a camera and, worse, freely gives away images on the 'net. It's the same with books, newspapers, magazines, guitar lessons and a million other things.
"Information is KING. Free information is, by definition, WORTHLESS. And it's information that keeps us trading. That's how economies work; by trading information, goods, commodities and services.
"However, the people making the really BIG money are the information factories such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Amazon, Microsoft, eBay, etc. These guys control information and have devalued that information for everyone but themselves.
"But if the 'net was taxed, just a few pounds per week per person, the entire information world changes. The big firms wouldn't have so much power. Smaller companies would have more chance to compete. The mechanic would get just a little more business. People might spend more on real vinyl, CDs, books, and whatever else. Value would return to millions of things. Money would move among the little people like us. The economy would grow.
"For anything to work, there has to be a POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE. That's how batteries work. That's how commerce works. That's why the wind blows. That's why the rain falls. But the internet levels the playing field for everyone except the information controllers.
"So think about a small tax on the internet. Think about revaluing information. Sooner or later, governments will wake up to this. And better sooner.
"So can YOU join my one-man crusade and spread the TAX THE INTERNET message? I hope so. But hey! Don't forget to have some fun too. It ain't all business and politics. Ya gotta surf a little as well..."
